How to Make a Pattern
When making a pattern, it is best to use material that will not got torn, bent, or deformed in any way. I have used paper to make my patterns before and it is hard to store without folding, and once it is folded you can never fully straighten it out. So, I bought pattern making fabric for $8/yard on Amazon.

After buying the fabric, I had all the other tools you need for making a pattern which is scissors, a pen, and a ruler.

Before drawing on the pattern fabric, I planned out my design.

After planning out my design on paper, I put it onto the pattern fabric and cut it out.

And that is all there is to it. The pattern is done, and I am now ready to put it onto my pants’ fabric.

Kalin,
Very interested to see how your project turns out. What do you think is going to be the biggest challenge the last couple weeks?
Hey Isaiah, I think the biggest challenge will be assuring everything is sewn correctly. Every small piece needs to line up and the stitching has to be straight.
I really appreciate how clearly you’ve laid out your planning and cutting process—it makes the whole pattern-making workflow feel very accessible. Using the grid fabric was a smart choice for precision, especially since it won’t crease like paper. I’m curious, do you plan on making any adjustments or testing the fit before cutting into your final fabric?
Thanks Danny! Yes, I really enjoyed using the graphed pattern paper, it makes dimensioning everything very straight forward. Since I have already made this before, I believe the pattern will be sufficient to just start cutting the fabric.
