Progress on Personalized GMT Watch

I’ve been quite busy with my other classes and work since we’ve been back from break so I haven’t had much time to work on this. However, I feel good about where I’m at. I have all the necessary components for the watch, I’ve confirmed that my movement works and fits in the case, and I’ve even practiced the painting I’ll be doing. Here are some pictures showing what I’ll be painting on to the dial, as well as a picture of my case and movement. I’ve added a soda can tab for a size reference.

The painting part of this is all I have left to do, and to be honest I’m nervous for it. I’m not a good painter, and trying to replicate an artist like Monet on this scale…. It’ll be a challenge to say the least but I’m excited to see what I’m able to create. I’ll have to use enamel paint as opposed to acrylic paint, and I’ll probably need to get a smaller brush. I think I need one good day to work on this, and then I’ll have a gift ready for my dad. Check back in a week to see the final product.

For some reason I have been unable to post my images on here, so here is a link to a google doc containing my progress pics. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w7eBqRJYCkvwZLpnmFj-v6VvrWaDEoniBU1vr-tqnug/edit?usp=sharing

    Hi Rystan,
I’ve been following your project as I’m also doing a watch project. I love the progress so far! I’m sure it’ll be a challenge to paint such a tiny dial but judging by your practice attempt I’m sure it’ll come out great. Are you planning on adding any hour markers? Also did you end up 3D printing the dial blank?

This is such a cool and meaningful project! Have you considered practicing on a few spare dials or similar-sized surfaces before doing the final one, just to get a feel for the brush and enamel paint? I’d love to see how it turns out!

  • Your project seems cool and I like how you are giving it to your dad as a gift! You may have already done this, but I’m sure there are a lot of YouTube videos for painting on the scale you are aiming for. Good luck!
