I’ve made solid progress on my origami-inspired folding chair project.

The final design is complete. After several iterations and adjustments, I’ve settled on a structure that balances flexibility, strength, and a clean folding mechanism. The chair folds flat using a series of rigid panels connected by a flexible backing material, which allows it to open and close easily while maintaining support.

I’ve made several small prototypes using cardboard to test the design. These helped me refine the angles, check the folding motion, and figure out how the materials behave when flexed. They were especially useful for identifying weak points and adjusting the dimensions for comfort and stability.

All materials for the final build have been sourced. I’ll be using 1/4-inch plywood for the main structure, which is both lightweight and strong. The panels will be attached to canvas fabric, which will act as the flexible backing material. This will allow the chair to fold while ensuring it remains sturdy. I’ve also planned to incorporate magnets to help with the alignment and secure folding, keeping everything in place when the chair is opened or closed.

In Rhino, I’ve finished creating the laser cut files for all components. The digital files include precise outlines for each panel and notch, ready to be cut. This was a big step—it means everything is prepped for fabrication and should fit together as expected.

Next, I’ll start the full-scale build by laser cutting the wooden pieces and assembling the chair. I’m expecting to do a few test assemblies to fine-tune the fit and folding motion before finalizing everything. I’ll have to do a lot of sewing, which is not my forte, but I have enough experience to create this piece.

Overall, the project is on track. The structure is working well in tests, and the materials and design are aligned with my goals: compact, efficient, and visually clean. I’ll share another update once the full prototype is assembled.

I like the overall silhouette and the clean lines of the chair and I am really excited to see the final product!

  • This is a super cool idea! I love chairs and I’ve never seen one like this before. I’m wondering if the 1/4 inch plywood will be structural enough to hold the weight of a person? I’m unfamiliar with the origami shape you’re using, so my brain tells me it’ll just collapse all the way inward, but I’m assuming that isn’t the case. Good luck with it!
