Clapperboard Project – Progress Report

Overview

The goal of this project is to create a vintage-inspired clapperboard that blends classic Hollywood aesthetics with functional craftsmanship. The focus remains on creating a piece that feels aged, handmade, and authentic—something that looks like it’s been passed around on old film sets.

What’s Done So Far

  • Materials Sourced: I’ve purchased the wood, hinges, enamel paint, and brushes. I chose pine for the base—lightweight and easy to distress.
  • Design Finalized: The dimensions follow a traditional clapperboard (approx. 12″ x 10″). I’ve also finalized the layout for the text and film fields on the board.
  • Initial Prototyping: I’ve tested several aging techniques on scrap wood—dry brushing, layered staining, and edge sanding. These helped me find the right balance of wear without overdoing it.
  • Hinge Testing: I experimented with hinge placements to get a satisfying “clap” and found a position that provides a solid snap without being too tight.

In Progress

  • Hand Lettering Practice: I’ve been working on getting the typography right—practicing with both acrylic and enamel to see which gives a more authentic look. I’m close to choosing my final type and layout.
  • Clapper Arm Shaping: I’ve started shaping and sanding the clapper arm and plan to attach it in the next few days.

Next Steps

  • Final assembly of the clapper and board
  • Apply hand-painted lettering and age the paint
  • Final round of distressing and sealing
  • Photograph and document the finished product

Challenges

  • Time: With other class projects and deadlines, I’ve had to work in short bursts. I’m on track, but finishing the details (especially lettering) might cut it close.
  • Lettering Precision: Achieving vintage hand-painted lettering without it looking too modern or too messy has been tricky, but I’m improving with each round of practice.
  • Workspace: My working area is limited, so staining and sanding without making a mess has been a bit of a juggling act.

Overall Status

I feel good about where the project is. The hardest parts—sourcing, design, and hinge testing—are out of the way. Now it’s down to details and finish work. I’m confident I can complete it on time and that it’ll meet the aesthetic and functional goals I set.

  • I am very happy to see progress on this project. I’m especially impressed by the choice to do the typography by hand. I think that is a personal touch that will make the final product stand out a lot.
