Project Progress Update – This Week

This week, my main focus has been on gathering materials and preparing for the next phase of construction. Over the weekend, I created a detailed bill of materials by cross-referencing my CAD model with available stock on the Home Depot website. Based on this, I selected a 1″x4″x8′ common board for the frame and a 2’x2′ project board for the base.

To bring the design to life, especially the hinged lid I had envisioned, I also purchased a latch, a hinge, and a wood finish. I ended up spending around $45 total, largely due to the cost of the wood finish and needing to upgrade to a 2’x4′ board to ensure I could cut the square portion I needed. The good news: I definitely have more than enough wood for the entire build.

Looking ahead to later this week, I plan to begin cutting the wood to the required angles and lengths, which should make assembly with glue or screws much more straightforward. One question still on my to-do list is whether to apply the finish before or after assembly. I’ve done some initial research and found mixed opinions—it seems to depend on the specific project and workflow—so I intend to ask someone with more woodworking experience before I proceed.

Overall, I’m feeling confident about the materials and the direction of the build, and I’m excited to start cutting and assembling soon.

    Hello Andrew,
I really like how you used your CAD model to build your bill of materials and cross-checked it with what was actually in stock. That makes your material selection process clear and grounded in your design. I’m curious about how you decided between glue and screws for the assembly—do you have specific spots where one will work better than the other or are you waiting to test that during the build? Also, are there any features in your CAD model that depend on applying the finish before assembly? That could help you decide when to apply it.
