For my main project I will be making a C-shape end table for my couch with a folding leaf extension. I am going for a rustic cottage core aesthetic for this table that will feature exposed wood, warm colors, and painted flower detailing.

My top 5 specifications are as follows:
- The table should be compatible with my couch and slide to be flush with the front edge of the couch. (~26 inches in height)
- The table should have a functional leaf that will fold out and be attached with a piano hinge. (10x12in tabletop will fold out to 20x12in)
- The tabletop and frame will be made of wood that will be a warm color
- The edges of the wood will be sanded to be soft and smooth
- The wood will have flowers painted on it

I will consider my project a success if I am able to achieve at least 4 of these specifications, however I will be aiming for all 5. I am prioritizing the appearance of the table over the stability and functionality of the lead extension. But of course my goal is to achieve the desired aesthetic and the functionality of the design. I will know my design is a true success if I actually use it in my living room after this class is over.
There are several constraints I face while creating this table.
- Money- cost of materials, purchasing extra parts in case of mistakes
- Supplies- access to woodshop tools and assembly tools (drills, fasteners, etc)
- Time- may not have time to redo components and fix mistakes
- Skills- minimal woodworking skills
- Room- sufficient work space, not sufficient storage space
I think the toughest constraints to deal with are money and supplies/tools. I have designed the table to use a minimal amount of wood by having a thin exposed frame, instead of full slabs of wood. This will reduce my materials cost. I am also purchasing a warm reddish color of wood, so I do not need to stain it a warm tone to also reduce cost. Due to how busy the wood shops on campus are, I plan to have the wood I purchase cut at Home Depot, and then assemble the table with my own tools at home. If I encounter any issues with the cuts of wood or tools I have accessible, I will then have to consult a wood shop on campus, which may be busy and difficult to find time to use the tools.

I have selected all materials for purchasing. My CAD and dimensions have been finalized. I will purchase and cut the wood later this week then begin assembly.

Hello Chrisanna, I quite like your design and appreciate its personalized utility. You are making very good use of the utility and materials at hand while not letting it interfere with your aesthetic. This excellent model illustrates how you can use simplicity to emphasize the aesthetic of your wood and hardware. One question – do you see yourself using this end table in the folded or extended position more often? I noticed that your orientation extends laterally to the supports as opposed to “reaching” further across the couch; is this for clearance or stability purposes?
Great work!
