Post 9: Top 5 specifications, top 5 constrain

The top five things I want my project to do are:

  1. I want my bookends to actually be able to hold up heavy books and be functional on my bookshelf. I want this to happen without having to use it in unison with my current bookends.

  1. I want this project to fit on my bookshelf and bring new life to it. I do not particularly love my current bookends so I would like the change.
  2. I want this project to reflect the ski bum aesthetic and include some kind of imagery that makes people think of this aesthetic.
  3. I also want this project to reflect my own aesthetic and fit into my room seamlessly.
  4. I want it to be durable and sturdy.

I will believe I succeed if I can say that my project hits all of the targets above. I also want to potentially do more with the rest of the ski and maybe make a key holder for my front door. Currently, I am prioritizing finding a cheap pair of skis which also have a design reflective of the ski bum aesthetic. For my assembly, I am prioritizing that the bookends are actually functional in my space.

The top five constraints I have with my project:

  1. I have been having trouble finding a pair of skis that are both affordable and available. I keep having a higher bidder on Facebook marketplace and I was hoping to already have my skis.

  1. I am worried about not getting skis that have a retro design and then having to figure our what I will paint on them.
  2. I am not sure if this counts as a moving item so I think I might need to add more to the project.
  3. I am worried about it not being able to hold up my books. I think I will for sure use rubber feet to make sure it does not slide.
  4. I have not found a lot about gluing skis and I am worried the epoxy I want to use won’t hold it together.

Right now, I am the most concerned about not having skis yet. I was hoping to have already been machining this week so I feel behind. I do not want to spend a whole bunch of money either because I am going to cut them up so it does not feel worth it to do that. I also am concerned about the functionality because most bookends sit under the books while this design sits outward. So I am just worried I will put it all together and then that will fail.

  • Hey Elise! I think this is really cool. It could be helpful to prioritize stability of the book holders. Other than that, I think this will turn out great. Good luck!
