As this is a type of project I have never done before, I have several specifications and constraints that I would like. As I am making a type of custom controller (a hitbox), I want it to be designed for my preferences and what I want in a controller.

Specifications:

  1. Sized to my hand: I want the distances between each of the buttons on the controller to be based on my own hand size, not based on pre-existing measurements. This will make it more comfortable for me to use.
  2. Separate pieces: I want to be able to have the actual aesthetic part of the hitbox (a plate that resembles an album) to be detachable, which will allow me to swap out what kind of aesthetic it has.
  3. Functionality: I want the controller to be usable. This is not as much of a priority as this is a non-aesthetic specification, but I would rather not have a controller that does nothing but look good.
  4. Portability: I want the controller to be small, able to fit in my backpack for when I travel. This limits the space for electronics and the potential space for my hands.
  5. Aesthetic: I want to replicate the album cover of Boston’s self-titled album “Boston.” This is a very special album to me so I want to do it justice when recreating it.

Constraints:

  1. Electronics: I am very notably horrible with electronics so working with them is a very difficult task for me.
  2. Manufacturing: As it is a time that many projects are occurring in several classes, the 3D printers and laser cutters will have decreased access. Realistically, it should not take too long to get the parts made, but I do not know when that will be.
  3. Painting: I am a digital artist with little experience in traditional art, so color blending and other painting techniques are not familiar to me. As I have chosen the most difficult of my potential album covers to replicate (Boston by Boston), I will have to learn these techniques.
  4. Time: I am currently incredibly busy, with projects in all but two classes (with one getting one very soon). Finding the time to both learn painting skills and put them into use will be difficult. It is likely that the controller will not be tested by the time expo comes around.
  5. Limited space: I have given myself a very small space to work with as I want my controller to be compact. In doing so, there is not much room to house the electronics. Managing this small space will be a challenge.
