For my main project, I will be creating a mountain shelf with a drawer. After my initial design stage, I have come up with my top 5 specifications and top 5 constraints that I will go over below.
Top 5 Specifications
- Achieves the Rustic Modern Aesthetic
Figure 1: Previous mountain shelf I made with the Rustic Modern aesthetic. The biggest goal for this project is to achieve a Rustic Modern look. I want the shelf to seamlessly blend rustic charm with a modern touch, making it a timeless piece that fits in different interior styles. To achieve this, I’m using a walnut wood stain to highlight the natural grain, incorporating clean mountain edges, and finishing it off with a brass handle for the drawer.
- Sturdy
This shelf needs to be durable and capable of withstanding everyday use without wobbling or breaking down over time. Whether it is mounted on a wall or sitting on a table, it should feel solid and stable. That means paying extra attention to strong joints and a well-balanced structure. - Functional Drawer
The drawer should operate smoothly and provide practical hidden storage for small items like keys, notebooks, or remote controls. A well-functioning drawer adds both convenience and sophistication to the final piece. - Looks Professional
Clean lines, precise assembly, and a polished finish should make the shelf look professionally crafted. Good craftsmanship will be key to making it feel high-end rather than homemade. - Ability to Hold Enough Weight
The shelf must be structurally sound, and capable of supporting a reasonable amount of weight without sagging or breaking. The drawer should be able to hold a full load of items without compromising the integrity of the piece. This means reinforcing joints and using the right materials to ensure strength.
Top 5 Constraints and Challenges
- Quality Wood is Expensive
High-quality wood comes at a price, so I opted for a more budget-friendly option. To get the look I want, I’ll need to put in extra work sanding and staining the wood to enhance its appearance while keeping costs down. - Limited Equipment Access
I am a full remote student and I only have access to the tools currently at my parents’ house. This means that I am limited in how I can cut and assemble the various wood pieces. - Time Constraints with Working Full-Time and Other Class Assignments
Juggling a full-time job and coursework means time management is crucial. So far, I’m on track to finish early, but I have to stay mindful of my other responsibilities and keep the project moving at a steady pace. - Limited Experience with Building a Drawer
Since I have little experience constructing drawers, this will be the most challenging aspect of the project. I am currently pondering how I will keep the drawer from getting pulled all of the way out each time it is opened. - Accurate Cuts with the Measurements from My CAD Model

Getting precise cuts that match my CAD model is essential to ensure everything fits together correctly. Any small misalignment could throw off the entire structure, so I’ll need to be extra careful with my measurements and cutting techniques.
This project is a mix of creativity, problem-solving, and craftsmanship. While there are a few challenges, I’m excited to take them on and create a shelf that looks great, works well, and feels like a real accomplishment when it is done.

Hi Taylor, I love your project and I think it is turning out great so far(and I think the idea is awesome also)! Are you on track with finishing before the deadline?
Hi Max, thank you! I am track to finish at least a week before the deadline.
