Art Nouveau/Cottagecore End Table Plans and Alternatives

For my main project I am planning to make a living room end table with a leaf that folds out. I will design this end table to fit well with my couch and match the vibe of my living room. The folding leaf will be the dynamic aspect of this design, however I may add or change the design to implement other moving components as well. I may potentially add some storage slots as well depending on my material cost and timeline. I am planning to make this end table entirely of wood, that I will then paint some designs on. I am going for a mix of the art nouveau and cottage core aesthetics. The silhouette of the end table will be fairly simple with straight lines and right angles. I plan to spice up the end table by painting colorful patterns. I plan on painting flowers and other plants on the table in muted colors to match these aesthetics. I will also stain the wood, but I am not quite sure what color yet. I want the wood to have a warm feel.

One alternative aesthetic for this project is industrial. This is the aesthetic I was originally going for, but I have since pivoted. This design in an industrial aesthetic would have metal components and muted colors. I decided that wood is a more feasible material than metal for me to work with for this project due to cost and my skill levels with these materials. The industrial design may also include some sort of concrete element. I have some experience with machining metal and welding, but I feel much more comfortable and independent dealing with wood.

Another alternative aesthetic for this design is mid century modern. A mid century modern end table design would feature a dark wood stain and some curved features. It would be a fairly simple end table with no colorful features or designs. Due to my current woodworking skills, I know I would struggle to create curved edges out of wood. I also really enjoy painting and I want to put a fun design on my project, which would not fit in the mid century modern aesthetic.

I am still in the planning stages of this project. After sketching my designs I will be creating the end table in SolidWorks to get all of my dimensions sorted out. I will then move into collecting materials. I will likely get my materials from Home Depot. I really enjoy shopping in person so I can touch and feel things before buying them. If anyone has other suggestions of where I could purchase wood, hardware, stain, and paint, please let me know! I do also worry about the end table being top heavy and unstable so I am still brainstorming how to combat this.

Hey Chrisanna, your project sounds and looks super cool. I think that the art nouveau and cottage core aesthetics will result in a really cool table. One idea that I had that may lend itself to these aesthetics would be to use some natural wood with a natural shape, but it would be harder to obtain that and work with it. Good luck with this project and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

      Hi Grant,
Thanks for your insights! The idea of using natural edge wood for this table did cross my mind, however I think it would be difficult to implement this shape with the folding leaf. I will continue to brainstorm how I could possibly make this work though!
