My main semester project is going to be this fantasy crystal lamp that acts as both a bedside nightlight and a portable light source one can use to walk around at night in the dark.
I want to explore only alternative aesthetics while keep the functionality the same across all the new designs. This is what I came up with:
Nuclear Fuel Rod
Instead of medieval fantasy being the aesthetic, if I wanted to do a futuristic sci-fi theme, I could design a lamp that looks like a glowing nuclear fuel rod. It would be cylindrical metal caps on either side. The base station used to charge it could also be made to look like a futuristic power stand, and any power buttons or motion sensors I need to install would be able to be prominently displayed and worked into the machinery rather than hidden from view. Here is a quick idea of what it could look like generated using Microsoft Copilot:
Minimalist Light
An alternative I thought of was inspired by this lamp:
The aesthetic here would be like a minimalist modern form. The ball of light would be removable.

Hi Adam, very interesting alternate design to your original project. I think the nuclear idea fits very well with a futuristic aesthetic, but could also work with a retro, steam-punk like aesthetic. I’m also wondering how you plan to source the materials for this project, as they could be quite expensive.
Your project sounds really creative, and I like how you’re considering multiple aesthetic variations while keeping the functionality consistent. The fantasy crystal lamp idea is unique, and exploring alternative themes like a nuclear fuel rod or minimalist light adds depth to your design approach.
One question: How do you plan to balance portability with stability in the design? Especially for the nuclear fuel rod concept, would the charging station need any special considerations to keep the lamp secure while still being easy to grab and use?
I plan on making the base station kind of snap in to position.
