For my main project plan, I’m going to engineer a ski boot warmer/dryer. This has obviously been done before, but I’d like to figure out a way to combine [aesthetic] with functionality to create something unique. I’m toying with a bunch of ideas at the moment, for example: whether to make the heater portable or a stationary rack, what types of pipes to use (3D print, pvc, metal, etc), and which aesthetic I should go for. For the heating element, I plan on using a 12V, 100W PTC heating element (although I need to research if frequent heat exposure is bad for the boot liner, in that case I will use a PC fan circulating room temperature air), this will be hooked up to a 12V DC power source (either an AC adaapter or 12V battery pack) and connecting a timer which can turn the fan on and off for safe use. I plan on using heat transfer to calculate time ranges to heat the boot up from different temperatures. The overall design will have the fan in cutout of a side of a wooden box, heat will travel upward through two pipes connected to the top of the box, effectively heating the boot. Right now, most of the design will depend on portability. I am leaning towards a smaller design that can you can hold, as it would be really nice to be able to bring the device on trips, in the car, and use it on the go. Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas!

For my aesthetic, I am considering two opposite aesthetics: nature/granola or retro ski aesthetic. Granola aesthetic tends to be simplistic with themes of nature and the outdoors. Retro ski features neon colors, vintage style designs with jagged lines. If I choose nature, I think I will create a tree like design, where the pipes are shaped like a tree. The design will feature earthy colors and I would try to hide any wires or electrical components to enhance the granola look. My other option is retro ski. I’m thinking of an 80s in Aspen type aesthetic, with retro ski decals on the box, jagged, neon lines, and a sort of jagged look with the pipes coming out.

I really like this idea for your project, I think the functionality of heating your boots is a huge plus, there’s nothing worse than cold boots. Keeping the project portable is a good idea since you’re not usually strapping your boots up at home so being able to keep them warm all the way up to the hill is a great idea. As for your aesthetic, a retro skiing vibe sounds really cool and unique, and you could maybe implement the nature theme together since painting the tubes as trees was good idea I thought.

    Hi Ben,

This is a really cool and unique idea. I like the tree aesthetics design. I think painting the boot dryer will add to the project a lot and highly recommend you do it. You could paint it like an Aspen so it would resemble a tree found in the mountains. I look forward to seeing how this turns out!
