Space Exploration: Aesthetic Plans and Alternatives

Primary Aesthetic: Space Exploration Theme Keyboard

I’m excited to transform my Red Dragon RGB keyboard into a stunning space-themed aesthetic. To achieve this look, I plan to either spray paint or use acrylic paint to customize the keycaps according to my vision. To ensure clean lines, I’ll utilize masking tape to prevent any overpainting. Additionally, I’m considering the hydro dipping technique, which could allow me to cover all the keycaps quickly and effortlessly. To enhance the space theme even further, I’ll be creating a small planet to affix to the ESC button, adding a whimsical touch to the overall design. This project not only gives my keyboard a fresh look but also allows me to express my creativity in crafting a unique gaming setup.

Hydro dipping, also known as water transfer printing, is an innovative and exciting technique that allows you to achieve intricate and vibrant designs on a variety of surfaces, including plastics, wood, and metal. The process involves submerging an object into a water tank where a film with a printed pattern floats on the surface. When the item is dipped, the film wraps around it, creating a seamless design that is both eye-catching and durable. This method is particularly popular among DIY enthusiasts because it enables the creation of custom graphics without the need for complex painting skills. With hydro dipping, you can easily transform ordinary items into personalized pieces of art, making it an ideal choice for gamers looking to enhance their gear or anyone wanting to add a unique flair to their belongings. The possibilities are endless, making hydro dipping a favorite among those who appreciate creativity and individuality in their creations.

Hydro Dipping Technique

Hydro dipping, also known as water transfer printing, is a fascinating technique that allows you to apply intricate designs onto three-dimensional objects, and it’s perfect for customizing keyboard keycaps. The process begins by filling a container with water and then floating a special film or pattern on the surface. Once the film is set, the keycaps are dipped into the water, allowing the design to wrap around them seamlessly. This method not only ensures a consistent and detailed finish but also saves time compared to hand-painting each keycap individually. By using hydro dipping, I can quickly achieve a vibrant and unique look for my keyboard, enhancing the overall space aesthetic I am aiming for. Also, Need to spray a clear coat to avoid paint to scrape off.

    Hello Tanmay,
I really like the idea of this project and am excited to customize your keyboard to fit your chosen aesthetic of a space theme. I think that the process of hydro dipping is pretty cool, but I do have a concern. I often don’t see this situation arise: do you have a plan if you don’t like your hydro dip design? Would you know how to remove the hydro dip? Are you allowed to redip on top of it if needed, or will you have to strip the film off? Also, how do you plan to make your plant ESC key? Anyway, looking forward to seeing how your keyboard build turns out. Another quick question is are you planning on replacing the switches on the board?

Hi Tanmay, this is a great idea! A space themed keyboard would look very cool. An RGB keyboard fits the aesthetic especially well! Do you have experience hydro dipping? I’ve tried it once, but didn’t do much research, so it didn’t end up too well. Do you plan to dip the whole keyboard at once (creating a cohesive pattern) or each individual key separately? Also, are you going to tape the lettering on your keyboard before painting it (in doing so, still letting the keys light up with the RGB colors)?
