Figure 1. Inspiration

Introduction

For my main project, I plan to create a layered wooden wall art piece inspired by intricate laser-cut designs. The goal is to craft a visually engaging artwork that captures depth and contrast using multiple layers of wood and negative space. The piece will feature a tree silhouette against a contrasting black modern interior decor, where natural materials and precise craftsmanship contribute to a refined, timeless look.

However, exploring alternative aesthetics allows me to think creatively about how the same concept could be reinterpreted in different design styles. Below, I explore two radically different aesthetic directions for my wall art: a futuristic cyberpunk style and a whimsical fairytale-inspired design.

Main Aesthetic: Layered Minimalist Woodwork

My planned aesthetic emphasizes natural simplicity with an intricate, delicate approach. The artwork will be constructed using laser-cut wood layers, with the tree standing out in a three-dimensional form against a solid or contrasting backdrop. The depth created by layering enhances the sense of realism while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

The raw wood finish keeps the artwork warm and organic, making it suitable for modern interiors, Scandinavian-style homes, or minimalist workspaces. The contrast between the natural wood grain and the dark background will add visual interest while keeping the composition balanced and elegant.

Alternative Aesthetic 1: Cyberpunk Futurism

What if the wall art embraced a futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic instead? Rather than a natural wood finish, the layers could be made from acrylic, metal, or illuminated materials, incorporating neon lighting elements to enhance the depth and create a glowing effect.

Instead of an organic tree, the design could feature geometric, circuit-like branches, representing a fusion of nature and technology. The background could incorporate LED panels or a metallic surface to reflect light, giving the piece an almost holographic appearance.

This version would fit perfectly in a high-tech, urban interior, a gaming setup, or a futuristic loft, transforming the natural theme into something sleek, digital, and immersive.

Alternative Aesthetic 2: Whimsical Fairytale Design

Another potential transformation of my wall art could embrace a whimsical, fairytale-inspired aesthetic. Instead of the clean, minimal structure, this version would be highly ornamental, with carved details of flowers, vines, and delicate woodland creatures interwoven with the tree silhouette.

The background could feature soft pastel hues or even hand-painted elements, enhancing the magical atmosphere. The artwork could also incorporate glowing fairy lights behind the cut layers, creating a warm, enchanting glow that adds to the dreamy effect.

This aesthetic would feel at home in a storybook-inspired café, a cozy cottage interior, or even a child’s bedroom, offering a touch of fantasy and storytelling within a functional art piece.

Conclusion

Exploring different aesthetics allows me to push the boundaries of my design thinking. While my primary vision for this project is rooted in layered wooden minimalism, the alternative ideas demonstrate how the same concept can be reimagined in vastly different styles. The cyberpunk version transforms the piece into a futuristic, high-tech art installation, while the fairytale aesthetic turns it into a playful, narrative-rich decor piece.

By considering these possibilities, I not only refine my current approach but also improve my first up-cycle project in a whole different level. Whether staying true to minimalism or pushing towards more futuristic or whimsical interpretations, this project has the potential to evolve in multiple exciting directions.

  • Looks like a great project! Are you planning on lazer cutting wood to achieve these cutouts? Also I was thinking that adding lighting to your project could be a way to kind of integrate cyberpunk aspects. More importantly, I think light would be great if you plan on using the piece as decoration in your room or something.

Hi Airyl! All three of your concepts (your main and two alternatives) are really neat! It’s cool how despite them being drastically different, you seem to have a solid idea in mind for each one. Is the dynamic aspect focused primarily in the use of lights? Or is the tree going to be dynamic itself? The minimal concept almost looks like it spins! So I was just curious on your plans for it! Good luck with your project!
