Idea and Aesthetics:

For my main project, I aim to design a functional, space-saving floor chair that folds using origami techniques. I am currently in the process of redoing my small studio living/dinning room to be a floor table, and need some efficient chairs to go with it. Since origami originates from Japan, the chair will naturally reflect a Japanese minimalist aesthetic—clean, efficient, and elegant. By integrating mathematical folding principles, I plan to create a structure that balances flexibility and strength while maintaining a compact form when not in use.

To contrast this minimalism, I could explore a more maximalist aesthetic through intricate crease patterns and highly decorative materials. The choice of material, whether fabric, composite panels, or another foldable medium, will influence both the chair’s functionality and visual impact. A detailed folding pattern can add complexity and ornamentation, while printed or textured surfaces can enhance the richness of the design.
I tried putting the existing chair design through an image ai to take on that maximalist aesthetic, and it lost some of it’s form, however, I wanted to focus on the ornate decorations and details that embellish it.
This project merges my background in mathematics, origami-inspired design, and an appreciation for efficient spatial solutions. Beyond aesthetics, it serves as an exploration of how traditional folding techniques can inform modern, functional furniture. The final piece will not only be a practical seating solution for my studio living room.
Plans
I am leaning toward a minimalist design, as I want the folds and form to be the piece’s main visual focus. Ornate decorations or elaborate aesthetics might clutter the design and detract from its natural beauty. By keeping it simple, I can highlight the elegance of the folding structure itself.
While I have not yet finalized an exact pattern, I plan to draw inspiration from artists who have achieved similar designs. My goal is to create a functional floor chair that seamlessly integrates origami-inspired folding techniques. The final piece may take the form of a chair with both a seat and backrest or a more compact ottoman-style stool.

For construction, I will start by identifying an origami fold that provides both structural integrity and collapsibility. Once I determine a suitable crease pattern, I will cut rigid materials such as wood, cardboard, or plastic to match the individual folded segments. These cutout pieces will then be attached to a flexible fabric backing, allowing the structure to fold and unfold while maintaining its shape. The fabric will serve as a hinge, holding the rigid components together without restricting movement.
To refine the design, I will begin with small-scale models using cardboard and fabric, testing different fold configurations and material combinations. Once the folding structure is functional, I will focus on selecting fabrics and cushioning to enhance comfort while preserving the flexibility of the chair.

Hey Sylvia, I really like this project idea, partly because I would love to have a chair like this! I also think it would be really cool to explore different textures and colors, a fuzzy carpet material might be quite comfortable. I’m worried it will be difficult to have the hard material to fabric attachments be load bearing, how are you planning on attaching the rigid material to the soft material? Will you also have to make creases/angled edges on the rigid material? I can’t wait to see how this turns out!
Hi Sylvia, this is such a unique and interesting project! Origami is such a fascinating art form and taking it a step further and creating functional furniture is so creative. I am curious to see what material works the best and which one you end up selecting for the final design. What type of fabric and color scheme are you planning on for the final product?
I think making some smaller models to test the design and prototype is a great idea and will save you a lot of time further down the road. I am very excited to see the final design!
