For my final project, I wanted to do something that would be useful for me. Also, after last week’s post, I wanted to go with something that would add to my aesthetic. I wanted to show off the nerdy bit about myself, yet add something a bit different. I am a big Formula 1 fan as well as Lego. As a result, I have bought some big Lego Formula 1 sets. They are pretty big. They are just under two feet long, ten inches wide, and five inches tall. I have four of these and am running out of space to display them. I saw some cool displays online that I found interesting and I wanted to do something similar and DIY. I have space above my computer where I could hang these on a wall.

LEGO F1 Wall Mount [1]
I intend to make a display that integrates all 4 of them. I know I want to have some lights on the board. I do not know if I should have it glow directly on the cars or if I backlight the whole board. I think the backlight would look really good, but lighting directly onto the LEGO cars has the potential to look even better, but has a high chance of it being bad. I also know I want them to all be on their side and potentially angled. This would have them all stacked on top of each other.

For the aesthetic, I was thinking of going minimalistic. I would Combine this with Dark Aero Aesthetic since that has everything as dark black and grey, but adds color as the pop. I was thinking of doing a simple back ground of a solid black with the F1 logo on the background. I would also have the border be black. This would then have the colors of the car pop. The one issue is the Mercades is mostly black so that might be some issue. I was also thinking that I could make the back page giver a closer look to carbon fiber. Below in a very rough draft of my idea.

Minimalistic F1 LEGO Mounting

The other option I was thinking would be like the intage travel poster. I would choose one of my favorite races and have a travel poster of that race be the backboard. This woudl make it so it does not matter what color the car is. One issue is though there might be too many colors clashing. I would still have the back lighting.

I’ll join you in the nerd camp. Formula is cool – and so is Lego. Great merger of the two in a way you can enjoy them perpetually on display. How much will this all weigh, and might it be too much for a simple wall frame on a few nails? Also, I don’t think your black Mercedes will clash with a black background at all – in fact I like the idea a lot. Especially if you have these backlit, you’re going to get a lot of glare and texturing on the car that contrasts with a flat backdrop. Batmobile in the Batcave comes to mind.

  • Hey Xander, I really like the idea of displaying your work in a cool and creative way. You can go a lot of different directions with placement and background, so I’m interested to see what you do. Is there a specific reason you choose to mount the cars the way you drew or are you still playing around with that idea? I think it would be pretty cool to mount one facing downward and two angled inward towards it to showcase different angles.
