Hello, everyone! After much thought and way too much Pinterest scrolling, I’ve finally settled on my aesthetic—Rajasthani mirror work. But then came the big question: traditional or modern twist?
The Struggle of Choosing a Design
Once I made this decision, I did what any rational person would do—I asked my mom. Being the fashion expert she is, her advice was simple: keep it practical because deadlines exist. So, I landed on a top-and-bottom set because, let’s be real, sewing a full gown while juggling life is not happening.
But now I’m stuck in design decision limbo:
- A dress I absolutely love.
- A top-and-bottom set that looks stunning.
Now, I’m just staring at them like an unsolvable riddle. But I’ll probably pick one of these unless I change my mind again, which is highly possible.
Alternative Aesthetics:
If my grand mirror work experiment doesn’t go as planned, I’ve got two backup aesthetics in mind.
Option 1: Elegant Pearl Work – Timeless and Regal
- Replace mirror work with delicate pearl embellishments for a sophisticated feel.
- Swirling pearl patterns instead of floral motifs for a sleek, vintage look.
- Pearl clusters at the hem of the pants, mimicking falling dewdrops.
- End result: luxury evening wear vibes.
Option 2: Vibrant Beaded Work – Playful and Boho-Chic
- Swap mirrors for multi-colored beads in bold hues like turquoise, emerald green, and ruby red.
- The top could have a mosaic of intricate beaded designs, making it an artsy statement piece.
- The pants could have a gradient of beads at the hemline, adding a fun, dynamic effect.
- Perfect for festival fashion or a bold, artistic statement.
What’s Next?
Now, I need to finalize the design and start stitching, which means bracing myself for inevitable sewing disasters. Whatever direction I take, it’s going to be exciting, chaotic, and hopefully wearable in the end.
Stay tuned!

Hi. This is an awesome project and super well thought out. I love the sketches!!I am excited to see the final project and what you decide on. Have you worked with sewing before? I imagine that this design is difficult because it not only includes the clothes but also all of the art on top. Will your mirror work reflect something like the first image or were you thinking something different?
Hey, thank you! I’m really excited about this project too. I have some sewing experience, but this design will definitely be a challenge with all the layering.Still finalizing the pattern though!
Hey Shreya, I love your initial concept and sketches! True respect for taking your mother’s advice – it has never led me wrong personally.
The idea of textiles is fantastic because it could capture your aesthetic in a delightful way and bring movement to life. Personally, I slightly favor your second sketch as an overall design, although I would be curious to see what you make of either concept and I would love to see the mirror work specifically.
One question – do you have a material in mind to create and use the mirror effect? I imagine true glass would be difficult to form, but you may run into crinkling or other issues with different materials. I look forward to seeing what you make of these initial design ideas!
Thank you

Hey Cole, thanks so much! I totally agree—mom’s advice is usually a game-changer. I’m really excited about the textile element too, and I appreciate your thoughts on the second sketch! For the mirror effect, I’ll be using chamki, which is similar to acrylic mirror sheets but lighter and easier to work with. It should capture the reflective look without the challenges of glass.
