Personal Aesthetic

My personal aesthetic can be best described as yacht core. I just see a lot of yachting in my future with a ton of friends and music and even more friends. But thats the future, right know my personal aesthetic is probably closer to 8th grade nerd core. Looking around my bedroom I have a minions poster, a poster of Van Gogh because my name is similar, and a planets poster, something I havent been too interested in since I discovered the universe.

Design Movements

I think I draw best from the design movement of Macklemore. The iconic photo of him in a fur coat riding a bicycle is super me. I feel like both him and I, like most people, didn’t try to force an aesthetic or can really fit into any clear aesthetic. My aesthetic just came from collecting a few things here and there over the years to culminate in an overall, loose aesthetic. I have a lot of books, but no book aesthetic, just kind of thrown around. I have alot of stuff on my desk but not in attempt to be maximalist just because I’m messy. Most of the furniture in my house was thrifted or borrowed(stolen) from my parents house. Maybe this all means that I have been too lazy to even follow a design movement or maybe it means that I followed the easiest design movement for me, suburban white kid aesthetic. That is why I can be best described as 8th grade nerd core, because its around the time I collected the most things.

Main project

For my main project, I will be trying something outside of my comfort zone. I will be attempted a traditional Galician Aesthetic. Now I am aware that is seemingly random. However, this is because I plan on making a jewelry box in the shape of a Galician Horreo for my girlfriend who is Galician.

Galicia is a region in the northwest of Spain where they speak there own language, and live in a really humid wet climate, closer to say Scotland than Andalusia.

Figure 4: Galician Horreo

I will take this overall shape and try to convert it into a jewelry box. You might be wondering what is it? Well it is a grain storage device used by Galician farmers. They have slits around them for airflow but don’t let any water in thus letting the grain dry. Most have crosses on them since Spain is very Catholic and a lot were built around churches. The Horreo is on stilts, or pegollos, because the stilts are used as “mice stompers” to keep out rodents.

Great post Max! I feel that yacht core is a great aesthetic for you, especially seeing some of the things around your space. I think the Minions poster is a great example. What made you interested in the Galician Aesthetic?

  • This is a really cool design exploration! It seems like the design of the traditional grain storage has a lot of purposeful elements to it like the slits for maximized airflow and pest control. Do you think you can use this design to optimize some sort of function for your jewelry box?

Hi Sylvia! Yes I plan on making the jewelry box in the shape on an Horreo in CAD and 3D printing it. Im hoping to have the earrings sit in and around the Horreo making it a jewlery box.
