Personal Aesthetic and Main Project Plans

My personal aesthetic is tough to pin down, but it is largely rooted in one of my major beliefs: that music inspires aesthetic.

(Figure 1): Four of the most famous Grunge bands.

Most of the time, when I try to plan my outfits, I don’t tend to match any one aesthetic, but I am largely influenced by various genres, mostly grunge. This is a style heavily influenced by 80s-90s era music. It is a genre depicted with angst and pain, but also the expression of one’s freedom. Because of this, I want to make something music-related for my final project.

(Figure 2): A drumstick bag.

I am a drummer, and have been for a very long time. Because of this, I think that a custom drum accessory would be the perfect project. I can think of two potential projects to make. The first is a drumstick bag. This is a simple creation that carries sticks.

On-Stage Drum Practice Pad (8")
(Figure 3): A practice pad.

The other idea is a practice pad. This is a small device that replicates the feel of a drum and allows for a portable way to practice drumming. I could not decide between which of the two to make, but then I had an idea.

What if I made both?

My idea is to create a practice pad with a built in holder for my sticks, allowing for both the sticks and the pad to be carried around together. I do not know yet how this will be accomplished, but I think it is very much possible.

  • Hi Min, I love this idea! I remember these practice pads from my time playing drums in grade school, especially when my family would prefer a quieter form of practice compared to the drum set. I also like your idea of making something functional to carry a practice set rather than trying to cram drumsticks and a practice pad into a different bag. What material do you plan to use to make the stick holder and carrying bag, and do you think your material selection will contribute to your aesthetic? Excited to see what you come up with!

    • I did think of another idea that could also work for this project (a custom controller) so I am debating between that and this. If I do go through with this project, however, using old clothes would work great in contributing to the grunge aesthetic. Materials for the stick holder are still up in the air, however.
