For my upcycle project, I’ve chosen to create a toolbelt out of a recycled pair of jeans in the reworked industrial aesthetic. My materials include many different metal components, belt buckles, jeans, and an assortment of fabrics. This project will end up being very rugged, denim, and hopefully, the design will be very useful. I want to use a lot of my materials so the final design will likely have a lot of components, making it a bit maximalist. The opposite of this aesthetic would be a futuristic minimalist toolbelt, with a sleek design and integrated functions. An example of this aesthetic would be the set and costume design in Dune.
I would imagine this toolbelt to be a very simple design with components integrated seamlessly into the belt, so aesthetically the design would appear very minimalistic. The goal of minimalism is to strip away anything unnecessary, so I likely wouldn’t use a lot of the extra materials I have. I would also try and follow a neutral color palette, which would be difficult to achieve in my current materials. I would probably have to strip the denim by bleaching it white and spray paint my metal components all to the same color. By doing that, visually the belt would look much more minimalistic.

The futuristic aesthetic is characterized by sleek, monochromatic, and tech-integrated design. Getting the futuristic look would be easy enough by making all the components monochromatic but integrating technology into the design would be impossible with the materials I’ve collected. A redesign of the toolbelt for the futuristic minimalist design might involve integrating sensors or timers to improve performance and probably using a material like carbon fiber or aluminum to achieve that sleek futuristic look.

This is a great opposite to your upcycle aesthetic. How easy do you think it would be to create a tool belt in the carbon fiber material you mentioned, and how durable and/or useful would that be?
I think this is the perfect opposite to your upcycle aesthetic. Can you think of any material that you can use for upcycling in order to create a “futuristic” aesthetic? You mentioned that you would need carbon fiber or aluminum to create this aesthetic, could you find a way to upcycle these kinds of materials?
