Mid-Century Modern Lamp Update 1

For my Upcycle Project, a mid-century modern lamp, I have started with sketching the lamp, and its various components to help determine the parts needed and the layout of the lamp. It also allows me to explore different shapes and layouts, and I ultimately settled on a modified barrel shape made out of wooden strips, reminiscent of classic mid-century modern aesthetics.

I have also begun sourcing materials for the project. So far, I have found a  source for the pallets, paint, and the scrap MDF pieces. Discarded pallets are readily available, and once I acquire them I will begin to break them apart using a circular saw. When they are in manageable pieces, I will select the ones that will work for my lamp and use a table saw to cut them into approximately 1 inch by 12 inch strips. These strips will make up the bulk of my lamp, and give it the barrel-like shape that I am looking for.

Color plays an important role in the aesthetics of a project, so I will paint all but one side of the strips a dark yellow that is prevalent in mid-century modern designs. Leaving one side exposed will bring a sense of materiality and rustic-ness to the project. Additionally, I will need to fabricate two discs that will support the strips on the top and bottom of the lamp. I plan to cut these out of scrap MDF sheets from my own supply using the laser cutter.

Once I have all the components of the lamp, I will begin to attach the strips of wood to each other using a pneumatic nailer, but I will leave them unglued for now to aid in the assembly later. I will then glue the discs that I have cut to the top and bottom of the lamp as well as the joints that were previously nailed.

Hi Scott, sounds like a great project! I like the concept of using reclaimed pallets and the barrel shape for the lamp. The color choice of dark yellow will definitely add to that mid-century vibe, and using reclaimed materials like pallets gives it a unique, sustainable twist. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!

    • Thank Allister! Mid-century is definitely one of my favorite aesthetics, so I’m excited to see how it turns out as well. I see a lot of pallets just getting thrown away, and that seemed like it would be a good source of material. It’s not the best wood out there, but it could definitely be utilized for something!

  • I’m super excited to see the result of this project, Scott! I haven’t seen a lamp made from pallet wood before; I like your design and thoughts on color as an important element as well. Have you decided on a lightbulb type, shape, and temperature to contribute to your midcentury aesthetic? Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

    • Thanks Eli! I’m hoping it turns out well. I have thought some on the choice of lightbulb, and it will definitely be on the warmer side of the spectrum. Either an Edison typ bulb or just a warm colored LED. We’ll see what I can get my hands on!
