I haven’t started on my textured ski painting; however, I have gotten the materials and started planning how I want it to look.
There are some examples where the canvas is just pure snow and skiers. These are much more minimalist, focusing on the shape and texture of the “snow.” I like the idea of this and the design, but I was looking to do something a little more with the idea.
This example is a little more dynamic. Adding trees makes it look more natural and realistic and adds another layer of depth to the painting. However, in this painting, the snowboarders don’t feel as if they’re following the slope gradient.
This is another example of trees. I like the shape of the snow a little more; it looks a little more natural and fluid with the trees on the side. The snow-covered trees are a nice touch as well.
This was a cool example with a lot more going on. The focus is much more on what’s painted verse the plastered ski slopes, That is used as an accent to add depth to the painting.
I liked this one because the plaster technique was applied to the sky with more going on than either [1] or [2] but still focused on the plastered texture.
For my project, I plan to mix the 3 concepts. The main focus is on the plaster texture with trees as the main accent details and including a ski, so the plaster makes a mountain shape but does not have it be as much of a focus as it is in [5]. The plaster will shape the mountain slopes, but not so prominently, allowing the painted elements to complement and enhance the texture rather than compete with it. I also want to experiment with layering techniques to create depth, making the trees appear embedded within the landscape rather than just placed on top. Additionally, I plan to use subtle variations in texture to differentiate between untouched snow, ski trails, and rugged mountain terrain, giving the piece a more dynamic and immersive feel.

Very cool James! I know you talked a bit about how you plan to texture this painting, as well as how you plan on including trees, but I’m curious about the other aspects you plan to include. Have you considered including the mountainous land scape in the background, or maybe a ski lodge?
Hi James! This is an awesome concept for your project; I have seen this style a lot recently and would love to see it in person. I am curious, what kinda of scale are you planning to use? I imagine these large-scale paintings will be a bit difficult and could require a lot of materials. Excited to see the final product!
