Nightclub/Rave Lantern Project Progress

For the upcoming upcycling project, I will be creating a lantern that falls under the aesthetic of a club or rave. The lantern will include old materials such as a plastic sheet, rod (PVC pipe or equivalent) or rope, disposable plastic water bottles, waterproof LED lights that are different colors, and water. Once assembled, the lantern will be lit up with different colors, which will be moving by refracting from the water to resemble the lasers you see at a typical nightclub.

My current schedule, shown in the above image (2) displays the upcoming tasks as well as a materials list required for this project. I have not started constructing or assembling any pieces of the assembly because I do not have all of the materials in hand as of right now. I plan on getting the other materials that I have yet to receive by February 8th at the latest. The materials I am currently waiting for are the LED lights, PVC pipe, and plastic sheet. The LED lights were ordered on Amazon, which can be seen in the above image (3) by Amazon. For the PVC pipe and plastic sheet, however, I am planning on going to a recycling center or the ITLL at CU Boulder to find scrap material that is sufficient enough. Once I have everything, I can begin on the other tasks by February 9th, such as sizing the materials and cutting or shaping them to the correct dimensions. The tasks have been broken up into different parts or subassemblies, which are constructing the platform, cutting all the water bottles, designing the water bottles then adding the LEDs to them, and then finishing off by completely assembling the whole lantern. I figured that if the tasks are broken up and have specific dates assigned to them, then it would be easier to meet the final deadline and ease the load throughout the week rather than cramming all of the tasks into one weekend.

From today to the date of February 17th, when we show off all of our projects, I will stay on track with my schedule and track my progress to ensure that it is finished with the highest quality possible. If it is a low-quality final product, then I feel that it will not show off the best features of the nightclub aesthetic. That is why I am going to try my best to put forth a high-quality upcycled product which will resemble the aesthetic I am going for as well as have a good project to look back on when starting my final project. I also want to receive good reviews from the rest of my pod. My plan is to dedicate at least an hour of my time on each day that a task is assigned so that I can accomplish these goals and not be stressed. I believe that my project will prove my hypothesis that upcycling can be both creative and functional, transforming recycled materials into something that is unique.

  • I think you’ve come up with an awesome idea for your project, and I am very interested to see how it turn out once its all completed. One thing I am curious about is how many LEDs you plan on utilizing to make the fixture.

    • Thank you! As of right now, I am planning to use 6 water bottles with two LEDs in each bottle, totaling 12 lights. This is assuming it does not look cluttered with this amount of lights.

I think that this is a really great upcycling project. I really enjoyed that you are finding a majority of your scrap materials from the ITLL manufacturing center and finding new use for the materials. Your manufacturing schedule also seems like it is well thought out and spaced to give time for possible unforeseen challenges in sourcing materials.

I would like to see a sketch or CAD model of the design. Have you decided on your plan for fastening the materials together with LEDs such as gluing? I look forward to seeing the final assembly!

    • Hi David, I would love to show you a picture of my sketch, however, I could not figure out how to insert it into a comment. There will be a plastic sheet on the bottom that will have 6 bottles equally spaced out and glued to the sheet. Then the lights will be added to each bottle and there will be a way to hold it up, whether it is by rope, string, or a PVC pipe. Thank you for the comment!
