Mid-Century Brutalist Pivot

May include: A model of a small city made of gray concrete blocks. The blocks are stacked on top of each other in a random pattern, creating a variety of shapes and sizes. The model is set against a white background.

The need to pivot from a threads suspended in epoxy encasing a rock has risen. The epoxy believed to be in the artistic provisions cabinet was donated to an art program prior to the beginning of the school year. However, the repository has a considerable number of 2x2x2 in cement cubes from a former job. Sculptures in Mid-Century Modern and Brutalist styles have overlapping attributes; namely use of raw materials, smooth mostly organic forms mixed with hard right angles. Most all of the sculptures examined lack formal rhythm but continually pull the eye throughout the sculpture. keeping it engaged in a potentially never ending loop.

modern decorative object consisting on two elements. A larger, black element that fits into a smaller one made of mahogany, which acts as a support that allows the sculpture to stand

My work would take on a brutalism–stemming form the french word for unfinished concrete- form with the use of raw concrete blocks. Its a well known and universal facet of brutalism although almost exclusively expressed in architecture. The ideal platform for the pivoted sculpture would be a square to rectangular piece of hard wood stained a robust warm brown to balance cold tones from the concrete. Balance of the piece, artistically and physically, will have a large impact on the size and shape of the base. The arrangement of cube will encompass the original mid-century intent of this project.

All in all this pivot has been an invigorating change. Initial manipulations explore various arrangements of the concrete cubes, with particular attention to creating dynamic negative spaces between elements. The current design direction involves stacking cubes in an asymmetrical configuration that taunts gravity while maintaining a priority of structural integrity.

May include: A silver and black abstract sculpture made of stacked geometric shapes. The sculpture is signed 'ART VON LEO'.

Cubes are in possession, selected wood base is available in the two wood shops, the remaining item for procurement is high strength glue capable of gluing concrete to concrete. Fabrication is set to be started on Sat Feb 8th and completed Sun Feb 9th. Fabrication times will be dictated by epoxy cure times.
