Thus far, I’ve gathered all my materials and started making a few cards.
Material Collection
Many of my materials are things I already own, but I wanted to go to Art Parts to supplement. I was able to purchase some additional scrap paper, doilies, books, magazines, tags, paint swatches, cards, construction paper, and more for under $15. I noticed that I can categorize my materials into 2 groups: 1) materials that are already associated with card making and collaging, and 2) materials whose original functions are not crafting.
Category 1 materials are as follows:
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Scrapbook paper
- Cardstock
- Vellum
- Construction paper
- Stickers
Category 2 materials are as follows:
- Magazines
- Postcards
- Doilies
- Playing cards
- Paper bags
- Books
- Paint swatches
- Gift tags
Beginning Making the Cards
So far I have made three cards, pictured below. They each have different themes, but I’m predicting as I make more, the cohesion in the aesthetic will come together. I’d like there to be a lot of variety in the cards, but when viewed as a collection, the vision is clear.

Hi Abby, I think this is a great idea, I’m also a fan of collaging/scrapbooking and I think the methods displayed here are really well thought out and clean. I especially like the final photo in which you used the lace as a background for the collage, it adds a great dimension / texture. I’m sure this project is finished already, but I wonder how the cohesiveness of a playing card deck will be when made from all of these different sourced materials.
This is a great idea! I like how affordable and artistic it is to decorate. Really creative way to reuse common objects, like those trader joes bags. Is there a technique or just a trick to make cutting out those outlines on some of the pictures easier?
