Post 2: Upcycling Project Aesthetic – Old Western Saloon

Introduction:

For my upcycling project, I wanted to focus on creating something I could use in my everyday life. At first, I brainstormed the idea to create an aesthetic coat hanger – a device with hooks designed to hang all of my hoodies and coats. I thought of this idea by thinking of room and home improvements, but after struggling to combine an aesthetic to the idea, my thoughts drifted elsewhere. As I was brainstorming, I was interrupted by one of my 3 roommates; asking to watch a movie, after denying the tempting request, I continued thinking. Shortly after the interruption, I started thinking of something I could design for the house that could be either entertaining or useful for my roommates and I. And it hit me- a dartboard.

Western Saloon Aesthetic

When I thought of the idea, the first aesthetic that jumped out and made the most sense was a western aesthetic. Most of the 21st century western bars have games like pool and darts, so the two combine well as a whole. I’ve been to a few western style bars and restaurants and most have a darker lighting with dark, stained wood being the main material used throughout the establishment. Saloons have a rustic and vintage look and feel achieved through different objects like bull horns, taxidermies of bucks and fish, barrels, scratched up wooden chairs and tables, and hanging lamps. I plan to incorporate as much of the western aesthetic to the project as I can come up with.

Project Idea/Materials:

I plan to create a dartboard with a saloon style double door. I plan on constructing the board using a cheap corkboard, aluminum for the circular dividers on the board, and paint. For the doors- I will find an old cabinet to take the doors off, if I can’t find one, then I will find some recycled wood. I will potentially cut these doors to match the curved style of a classic saloon door. Next I will stain and distress the wood to match the rustic look of the saloon. I will then construct a small box for the board to rest in, and the doors to hinge to. I plan on coming up with more ways of putting more western flare into the project through artwork or small additions.

  • I really like how the aesthetic will match perfectly with the project. The materials shouldn’t be too hard to find too. I’m interested to know how intricate you will go with the design. Will you screw in all the different “small additions” or carve into the wood at all? Also, will it be made out of all wood or incorporate other materials?
