For my upcycle project I have decided to repurpose glass waste produced by disposable or old products. I plan to take items like burnt-out light bulbs or old glassware and repurpose them into planters or terrariums for small plants like succulents. With this, I hope to achieve a modern bohemian aesthetic.

Example of Modern Bohemian

Modern bohemian which is also called “boho chic” bends the carefree and electric spirit of the original bohemian looks with clean lines and contemporary elements. It features abundant and worldly textiles along with bold patterns and an assortment of textures layered in a cozy yet artistic manner. Natural materials like wood and woven fabrics are common, and the vibrant color is often balanced with muted and earthy tones to create a laid-back cozy feel.

Light Bulb Terrarium

Many people including myself have had to deal with the constant waste from incandescent bulbs. These light bulbs feel like they burn out every month. My plan is to clean these discarded bulbs out and turn them into small terrariums. I would like to make terrariums with as opposed to planters as I am not the best at keeping plants alive. My hope is to be able to create sealed terrariums that are self-sustaining.

Coffee Pot Planter

I would also like to repurpose other glassware like old coffee pots or pitchers into a planter for small plants like succulents or cacti.

Hey Kyle, I really like the idea of reusing a light bulb. It’s a super cute idea with the coffee pot. I have a question, what happens if the plants dies? Would you throw the whole project away or redo the project?

Michael: It’s a nice idea. How to make bigger?
Little Blake: Good luck to you.

    • Thanks for taking the time to thoroughly read my post Ariana. the plan is for the plant to not die… but in the event of that, I will likely try and empty the bulb and retry. To respond to Mr. Ta if the need for a bigger is necessary I will attempt to source a larger light bulb.

Hi Kyle, I really like this idea. A terrarium made out of spent lightbulbs or other glassware is a really cool and unique way to life back to these otherwise trashed items. Another idea for a container (which you may have already thought of) is a clear wine bottle with a cork or a small jam/honey jar. For a lightbulb, do you have a plan on how you’d be able to arrange the plants/rocks inside? That seems like it might be a challenge given how small the opening is. Also, are you going to have some sort of stand so that the light bulbs won’t roll around once you’re finished setting them up (like your second image)?
