For my main project, I want to do something with RGB LEDs. I want to do something similar to RGB LED strips that are commonly found in college dorms. I was initially inspired by the picture below while going to parties at various friends’ houses and I wanted to do something like this for my house. I also have some experience working with RGB LEDs so I am hoping to leverage that. This is just something I was drawn to and I think it looks cool.

SKONYON LED Light Strip 32.8 ft 10 m RGB LED Light Strip Color Changing 3528 600 LEDs with 44 Keys IR Remote for Home Bedroom Kitchen DIY Decoration

In the picture above, you can see simple strips but I think I want something more than just simple strips. It also has the minimalist aesthetic which is mainly what I think I will go for when I converge on a final idea.

I was also inspired by the Astra Lumina art show that came to my city.

Seeing the fluid movements in multiple dimensions here made me want to do something that has more than just a simple strip at the ceiling of my room.

Nanoleaf Lines

Putting these two together, I am thinking of making something similar to Nanoleaf lines. This is a product that you can attach to your wall and have it be a certain color to set the mood.

For my project, I am thinking of creating a hexagon pattern since hexagons are the bestagons. I am not yet sure how big this will be since I am not sure if I want something that is just a small object or something that covers an entire wall. Below is a sketch of what I am thinking.

Obviously, there is a lot that needs to be figured out, but I will stay flexible for now.

Your project idea sounds ambitious and exciting, especially with the inspiration from RGB LED strips and the Astra Lumina art show. Have you considered how you’ll implement the hexagon pattern and control the LEDs to achieve the desired effects?

It definitely won’t be easy. It will be a lot of code to get it to work well. I am hoping that the integration goes smoothly. Hopefully things work out.

    Hi Kyle,

I really like your ideas for your project. RGB LEDs are everywhere and can be a bit expensive. I like that you are making something yourself. Are you planning on 3D printing the enclosure for each panel? Or some wood working? Overall, I think your project can turn out really well especially if you can control all the LEDs however you want.
