I am very interested in the timeless elegance of Scandinavian aesthetic design, a style celebrated for its minimalism, functionality, and pastel color palette [1]. Embracing simplicity as a guiding principle, Scandinavian design captivates with clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and an emphasis on geometric forms [1]. In my exploration of this design philosophy, I am particularly captivated by the use of soft pastel hues, such as delicate blues, gentle pinks, and muted greens, which evoke a sense of tranquility and a connection to nature.

The minimalist approach of Scandinavian design aligns with my vision of creating a final piece that is both refined and functional, by crafting a flower vase from egg cartons, transforming a commonplace item into an aesthetically pleasing and purposeful object. The geometric influences, characterized by clean lines and well-defined shapes, add a layer of structural sophistication to the simplicity of the design.
Inspiration for Scandinavian aesthetic vases
In crafting this upcycle project, I aim to seamlessly blend the modest materiality of egg cartons with the sophistication of the Scandinavian aesthetic. By doing so, I hope to engage in a creative endeavor and pay homage to a design movement that values resourcefulness, sustainability, and an enduring connection to the natural world.

Hi! What an interesting idea, taking the egg cartons to make a flower vase with a Scandinavian aesthetic. I feel like this is a great material for your aesthetic because egg cartons are fairly easy to manipulate and color. One question I have is how you will take egg cartons and make them into a flower vase, and one that is durable. I feel like egg cartons might make a good “paste” because of the type of cardboard it is that you may be able to shape into a flower vase with some type of bonding agent.
I will cut them and coat the back side with a thin plastic sheet to avoid water damaging the egg cartons. If that doesn’t work, I will try to use recycled parts of plastic cups to create a base to then paste the cartons onto.
This aesthetic lends itself well to re-cycling. Your description of the aesthetic is very concise, whilst still being full of imagery (like mimicking the aesthetic itself). The substitute of light wood with egg cartons–that are pretty similar in colour–is a great idea. Seeing the vases in the photo above, it doesn’t even seem like egg cartons. Do you plan to “string” the egg cartons? Or will you use the structure of the egg carton? Will you paint it a soft pastel colour or keep the beige? I also wonder how strong egg cartons would be after getting wet. Otherwise, I really look forward to seeing your project!
I think I will cut some parts of the egg cartons to make them more symmetrical. I was thinking of painting them either white or light gray because I think these colors are more representative of the aesthetic. To protect the egg cartons from the water, I will cover the backside in recycled plastic.
