For my main project I plan on constructing a deer mount out of MDF using a laser cutter. I will have to make each one of the parts via Solidworks in order to be able to laser cut the MDF. It will be very challenging to make each one of the pieces in the assembly due to the complex geometries as well as the proportions. I’m hoping that some of the pieces are similar enough that I can scale ones that already are made either down or up. I am currently planning on making the piece out of MDF without any finish because I like the burnt edge look as well as the simple aesthetic. I want to avoid having too much going on with the color that it takes the attention away from the piece.

Below are some of the other ideas that I have for the project.

The top one includes a lot of color as each one of the pieces in the assembly are painted a different color. I feel that this design could be interesting because it would look significantly different depending on the angle that you are viewing it from. The second picture is going for more of a natural look as each one of the pieces in the assembly will be painted in a manner that is similar to an actual deer.

  • Hi Connor, sounds like a very cool project! Do you like deer or hunting? Just curious based off your inspiration for this project. Also, I’m not sure if you are finding the look you are getting with MDF, but if not I noticed that your inspiration picture is using more cardboard so I am wondering if that more flexible material will make the linkages easier. Great project and excited to see how it will turn out!
