Mark Rober’s “Package Thief vs. Glitter Bomb Trap”
While I would have loved to find a lesser known creator, I feel that Mark Rober’s package thief bait videos match the spirit of the fast approaching April 1st quite well. Achieving certifiably viral status, his prank on those with nefarious intentions is quite the display of karmic justice, with a well-designed and dynamic bait package gadget that records 360 degree footage of thieves, throws glitter, and dispenses a horrible odor. Within the video, Mark states that the idea was inspired by the Rube Goldberg-esque traps constructed by Kevin McAlister (Macaulay Culkin) in the movie “Home Alone”. In the past, Mark Rober worked on the Mars Curiosity Rover for seven of the nine years that he was employed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and more recently he worked as a product designer for Apple’s Special Projects Group. Late last year, he released a follow-up package thief video, improving cable management, the dispensed odor formula, and other aspects of the initial bait gadget, showing just how fruitful design iteration can be.

Ive seen this video before but it’s a great one. It’s a funny and a great project. It’s tempting to try to make one of my own…
Justin,
Nice choice in video. I’ve seen this one before and its one of my favorites. I love the motivation behind this guys build, and how he walks the viewer through the entire build and his thought process behind everything. The video is so well put together and the guy put some series engineering into this design. Nice choice!
