For my final project I decided to build an ambient lighting device it will be in the form of a cylinder. LED’s will be placed near the bottom emitting light upwards shining an inner cylinder that houses all of the electronics and mechanisms. The light will be reflected thru holes placed on the outer cylinder shaped with nature inspired geometric shapes. Additionally, the outer cylinder will rotate relative to the bottom and inner cylinder. The green cylinder with the shapes will be 3D printed using a Lulzbot TAZ 6 from the Idea Forge or ITLL, it is going to use almost all of the available Z-travel from the extruder.
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) will be heavily used throughout thus I chose a raspberry pi zero to power the LED’s and servo motor both are controlled thru PWM.
A continuous rotation servo will spin the outer cylinder relatively fast I’m expecting it will be able to do 40 rpm.
An LED strip will be at the bottom of the cylinder.

The initial design for this looks really cool based on the CAD render you have. Though 3D printing can prove to be very tedious at times.
This is a really cool idea and I think it seems easy enough to accomplish in a way that would look really cool. I like the idea of having different colored light patterns even if you just choose the colors that you want.
Hey Andres I like your project idea. I think the abstract shapes will create an interesting aesthetic with the light. You should consider using different shapes but I like your current CAD model. The use of multiple colors is great and I’m excited to see the outcome.
It seems like you have a clear vision of your project! I like the contrast between using nature as your inspiration but the light is completely manmade. I was actually in Moe’s bagels the other day and the light fixtures they had looked just like this!
Hi Andres,
I like the shape and the aesthetics of your idea. I think once you figure out the final product, it is going to look very good. great work.
Your project is very similar to mine with very different aesthetics. This is war.
I really like this idea. One thing you might want to look into for more visual inspiration are the Tron movies. Your single color LEDs remind me a lot of the look of those films. I think you’ve got a good start with this, I’m interested to see where it goes.
Hi Andres,
I think this is a fascinating project. Using the resolution as a piece. I encourage you to make a film of the 3D printing process. You minimalist design would pair really interesting with a video montage.
Also don’t worry about not using wood, I think you aestetic is really cool and am looking forward to the final project.
