I am basically making a rotating disco light. I will put colorful cellophane papers on the side of the cylinder while it depicts dancing movements on the wall. The upper dome will have a black painted aluminum sheet with holes and words inscribed that shines the ceiling with the clear white light. My biggest challenge was to design a rotating object and light powered by one battery. After researching options for what kinds of designing for rotating object with light on, I choose the beacon light design to satisfy my requirement.

The main components of this project will be an LED light bulb and socket, DC motor, plastic cylinder, and dome. For the base, I will use scrap woods from the ITLL and machine it. The total estimated price to the whole system is around $65. Those raw materials like a simple plastic cylinder are pretty expensive. My budget is really tight since I am a poor college student so I hope that I find the materials at a cheaper price or free. If anyone has ideas or scraps to get this in a better way, I would love to hear.

This seems like an interesting variation on the normal disco ball or even the small ones that you could get as a kid with a rotating base and a black ball casing with holes holding colored lenses to project the light.

    Hi Jaehyung,
I like your idea. I think the aesthetics is going to be great. Using designed light is tricky but if it done perfectly it going to looks beautiful. Good luck.

I like the idea that you have for your project. As mentioned above, I am having a hard time imagining the final aesthetic of your project and I am excited to see how it will turn out

  • Jae, cool idea great inspiration from the disco ball. I think you should look into the mechanical aspects about it as interfacing the motor with the gears could be more difficult than what you think. It should look great when spinning with different colors. Good luck in the building process.

  • I like your unique approach to your inspiration and aesthetic. I was wondering how you were going to mount this project to your soundbar, you didn’t mention any part about having a mounting system?

  • I like your idea. The definition of the shadows might be hard to achieve. I’m a little confused as to the exact look of your artifact. Will it just be a bulb covered by a plastic shell? Will the light be projected fully on the sides or through pinholes?

    • Yes, a light bulb that covered by a spinning plastic shell. The light will fully project on the cylindrical side, but the upper side of the cylinder will project through pinholes.
