For my project, it was born out of necessity. I needed a way to stay organized on my desk at home or work. I started to think of the best way to do this. For this class it isnt about coming up with something that is new and revolutionary necessarily. It is more about how your product looks and under what aesthetic it is built. For mine I wanted to use something of a toothbrush holder like this one:
To try and find which way I wanted my project to go I practiced sketching. As you can see below I had a more rounded version on the left. I think this would’ve been a really cool design but I didn’t want to do the whole project CNC wise. I wanted to be able to turn the knobs myself and use the lathes/mills. The design on the right was much more easily machined so I went with something like that.
Here you can see my prototype. Very simple design and very functional. Just wanted to get an idea about how large I wanted the individual disks to be and how many holes I should drill in it. I decided I didn’t need this many holes.
Originally I wanted to do a steampunk color aesthetic but the brass that I got donated from a company was not able to be machined unfortunately. It would’ve been a real pain to do that. I switched to aluminum to match the rest of my room. It is a very colorless room. I have all grey scale things so it will fit well with the rest of my room.
These are the actual drawings that I used to machine the parts.
Here is a picture of the manufacturing and raw materials That I used. I used a mill to drill the holes in the top and I used a lathe to cut all of the rotationally symmetric parts.
Here is the final product and I really like how it turned out. It hold pencils very well. I like how it looks on my desk and it fits really well.

I like how when designing your project you thought about the manufacturing processes. Instead of picking something and figuring out how to machine it, you wanted to get experience with multiple manufacturing processes and designed the product around that.
Hey there! I feel like this is a great idea for a project — creating something functional and useful in everyday life. I like that even though you couldn’t machine the brass, you came up with a great solution to still fit your steampunk aesthetic. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t seem to see any of the photos on your post. You may need to change the post type to fix this — I’d really love to see the photos of your project. I also think that proofreading your work is very important, so don’t forget to use spell check.
