For my final project I intend to make a bed stand. But this won’t be your ordinary run of the mill bed stand. No, this bed stand will be custom made to fit in my weird bed room that has no 90 degree corners. As a result the bed stand will be shaped like a triangle – or pizza shaped.

The main aesthetic I wish to achieve is one I haven’t heard of before – I intend to have this bed stand achieve the pizza aesthetic. I will achieve this in several ways: The bed stand will be shaped like a pizza. The top of the bed stand will be painted like a slice of pizza. The sides of the bed stand will be painted with a pattern that will feature pizzas. The one thing not pizza about this bed stand is that it will be made out of wood.

Even though I have a clear vision for my project, there is something I want to hash out in my prototype phase. I need to figure out which way I want the bed stand to open, along the side, or along the crust? Figuring this out is vital to my project. If I can’t open my bed stand lazily from a laying down position in my bed, then the bed stand may as well be garbage.

To test this I made a couple of prototypes and imagined how they would open. You can see these prototypes below:

I concluded that the large moment about the crust makes a crust-hinge unfavorable. As a result I intend to follow the side-hinged design, it should minimize the effort required to look inside the bed stand.

If you like this idea make sure to read my next blog posts following the construction of this lit piece of furniture. And even more importantly, make sure to spread the good word of the pizza.

Really creative idea. Food themed designs seem to be getting more popular. I’m curious how you came up with the idea to make a pizza bed stand.

Finally a project whose aesthetic stands out more than the function! I know it was a functional decision, but our projects are supposed to be aesthetics-first, function-second, so it’s nice to see your cool project which will be useful but which is more noticeable for its appearance… everyone has tables, not everyone has a 3x2ft slice of cartoony pizza in their apartment! I think it would be cool if the toppings were separate pieces, but I’m trying to think of a way this would work and a purpose it could serve—perhaps you could turn a coasters into pepperoni slices, or a stack of books into canadian bacon, or take a wireless phone charger and make it look like a black olive.

  • This idea is genius, and it’ll probably be the first and last of its kind. I don’t think many people have thought to combine food and furniture together, so I’m looking forward to witnessing history being made. The prototype demonstrates the aesthetic very well, and it looks like you got some functional testing in as well. You might also consider printing the giant pizza, laminating it, and gluing it to the to make the surface a realistic photo, but that may make you hungry every time you look at it. I’m looking forward to the final product!

I really like how the table performs a useful function and hits an aesthetic of its own with the pizza. I am worried that i would get hungry with this in the corner of my room. Nice to see how the prototype has been tested with the functional aspects and the movement of the lid. i like how the legs incorporate the breadsticks and keep the whole food aesthetic going for the design. Im excited to see how the design comes out and what happens with the inside of the table.

  • I love how crazy this thing looks but at the same time how much thinking went into making it user-friendly. Painting it would probably take some time but from the prototype it’s going to look great!
    Also, great presentation!

What a cool (and slightly hilarious) project idea! I like that you’re going to make a product that means something to you based on the need for a triangle-shaped side table. The aesthetic that you’re thinking of going for is awesome too, turning your bed side table into a slice of pizza because it is a triangle. My only suggestion would be to add some texture to your table top as well. Perhaps you can make the crust and toppings 3D. And you could paint the cheese and everything shiny so it looks a little oily. Either way, fantastic job making a prototype as a visual. I can’t wait to see where you go with the final product. Good luck!

This is a great project that will be very functional. I really like the pizza aesthetic and how the whole structure will be pizza themed. The real question is what toppings are you going to include on the top slice? Overall, nice prototype and i’m stoked to see how the final product turns out.

Anything pizza is a great idea. I think its awesome that you have thought about everything from moments on the pizza, to breadstick legs. What an interesting aesthetic, I have no clue how you came up with this idea. But, I think its super creative and since your room is set up the way it is, it sounds your set up for a great project.

That is awesome! Very entertaining and also practical idea! Very thoroughly thought out. I appreciate the thought that you put into the hinge location. A large moment is definitely something that you do not want to deal with in the middle of the night! What kind of angle are we dealing with here? You think its pizza sliceish angle? If so, your room is seriously messed up but it spawned this awesome idea!
