My source of inspiration for this final project has come from my new hobby of learning tricks on a butterfly knife. As of right now, I only have cheap, low quality butterfly knives and I think it would be a fun project to make a complete one myself without having to buy any parts for it. I have seen lots of cool designs on the internet so I know there is a wide variety of approaches I can take for this project. I am also looking to anodize parts of it to give it a more unique look.

Kevin, this is a cool idea. It will be something that is functional, but will also have a great story behind it. I’m curious how you will make the stainless steel blade. It doesn’t seem too difficult to do in the metal shop, and may be worth a try before you source a blade from other places.
You should try to incorporate a safety feature into this blade, such as a lock or blade sheath. You don’t want to cut yourself by accident.
I have a knife with a finger hole that I love to spin around and play with. Your desire to learn tricks with a butterfly knife is familiar to me with my own blades. Perhaps you can show a trick or two when you present it at the end.
Hi Kevin. From your post, I’m not sure I have good grip on what kind of aesthetics are going to inspire you. Could you explain what a butterfly knife is a little more? Is it for throwing for target practice, or for flipping like a street performer? Also, when you say “I’ve seen lots of cool designs on the internet” that’s awesome! What did you find? If you’re not going to buy parts is this kind of an upcylce-type project? The ones in the photo look really complex, it will be cool to see your final product.
