While thinking about what to make for this project, I remembered a concert that I saw recently. The band Moon Hooch modified there instruments differently in each song to create new and unique sounds using mostly upcycled materials. They originally started playing in the subways stations of New York and as a tribute to that they use urban materials such as traffic cones. Throughout high school I would busk with friends in New York City as well and so for my project I am going to use only urban materials to create a woodwind instrument from scratch. I plan on using traffic cones, wooden dowels, and pipes for this project.

I’m a big fan of Moon Hooch too! I saw their tiny desk session on YouTube and immediately became a fan.
Your project sounds quite ambitious but I can’t wait to see what you come up with. How are you using your listed materials? Are the dowels going to be used as reeds?
This is a very interesting project. I once made an electric guitar from scratch, but I didn’t have to se remnant materials and I had given myself a decently large budget. One piece of advice, this will likely take 2-3 times longer than you’re probably anticipating, so plan accordingly. I’m not sure how you are going to pull this off, but I like the idea a lot. This will be a challenge, but I’m very interested to see how this project turns out.
I think this is a great project and can’t believe you are even going to try to calibrate the pitches. How are you going to use the traffic cones? Can’t wait to see how this turns out!
