For my final project I want to focus on the dynamics of plants and containing that within something that is normally conceived as stagnant. To accomplish this I am creating a snow globe terrarium. An example of a normal terrarium is pictured below:
I want to achieve a fairy tale aesthetic on the interior of the terrarium. I plan to do this by picking plants that look like miniature trees. I also plan on doing this by buying miniature garden figures of fairies, unicorns, or something similar. I hope for it to feel as though someone is transported into another realm when they look into my terrarium. This aesthetic is illustrated in the image shown below.
The other aesthetic I plan to achieve with my final project is a nature/log cabin aesthetic. I plan to make the base of the terrarium out of wood or to make it look like it’s made of wood. I want the final product to almost feel like someone has taken it right out of a forest. I plan to accomplish this with wood paneling up the side of the base, just like a log cabin. This part will probably be the most difficult part of the project and I foresee a lot of setbacks. One such setback I expect with this part is the ability of the wood to retain water/not leak and to hold soil. I am also unsure how to make the wood into a cylinder shape.

This project looks like a really cool concept to create a bigger scale snow globe that utilizes natural features to entice the person and not a background with oil and snowflakes.

This is a really cool idea. I am excited to see progress pictures of the plants growing and developing in the area to be able to see the dynamic movement of them. You could also add carnivorous plants so that you could see them move quicker (venus fly traps)
Hi Brittany, I think it’s a great project. Make sure you pick plants that are suitable for the environment you are planning to put them in, I would look into easy plants to grow that can survive fluctuations in temperature, moisture and also don’t require a lot of light if they will be indoors. You can always buy plants however growing your own is very satisfactory and you will like your project more.
I like nature. But I like the beach better than the mountain. Tropical life!
Hi Brittany,
Great idea and great work. I like the fairy tail theme and the sphere shaped glass. although it is going to be challenging to work with sphere glass, It is going to look beautiful.
I am planning on creating a terrarium too so we can help each other out if we need it! I think this is going to be really pretty in the end. Also, if you don’t end up growing the plants now, you can always buy plants and plant them in the terrarium when you are assembling it.
I like the idea and I’m excited to see the outcome. Due to the plants potentially growing I think you should consider the overall size of the Terrarium. What elements are you incorporating that represent the fairytale aesthetic vs. the nature aesthetic?
I think the snow globe fairy tale aesthetic is a clear direction to follow and it seems very interesting. I’m unclear how you’re going to shape the glass, would you disassemble a snow globe and refill it with your components? I would give that some more thought, since it’ll be an important factor moving forward.
Hi Brittany,
Cool idea. I wonder if you could add another aspect that will interact. Maybe instead of creating a terrarium in the aesthetic of a snow globe, you could create a snow globe with a terrarium aesthetic. Could be interested to have an oil filled globe.
