Why and What Next?
Next with my project I plan to add some finishing touches. There are still a few spots that could use a little more sanding to ensure that all sides are perfectly smooth and flush. On the inside of the box is some pencil marks from construction that I need to go in with some hand sand paper to get rid of. Once this is done I would like to add dividers to the inside of the box and felt the bottom. Once this is done I can finish all the sides with Linnseed oil, this will give the wood an even nicer look and feel. Since I only have one final this can all be done during finals week since I will have plenty of free time and the woodshop should be relatively empty.
Original Project Intent vs. What I Ended Up With
My project ended up being much more of just a box then a jewelry box. I think that this is even better though and my mom will be able to use it for a variety of things. I am very happy with how the box joints came out and I learned lots while constructing them. I am happy with my final result but know that if I were to do the project again I could have done an even better job. This makes me excited because I am sure that I will have the opportunity to build many more boxes over my lifetime.
Public Reaction
The public reacted well to my box, like I expected they were very interested in the construction of the box joints. I feel the public was impressed with my box and enjoyed talking to me about my ideas and my construction process.
Reflection on Semester
This semester I learned a lot. Aesthetics is not something that I have thought about for a long time beyond the simple “That looks terrible” statement. The thing that I feel I learned the most about was perspective and promoting different feelings based on aesthetics. For example using different colors to promote feelings of things like: sleek, mean, aggressive, light.
What Will I do next with the Project?
I plan to make the final adjustments to my box and then gift it to my mom for mother’s day!!
What Do I wish I have done Differently:
I wish that I had planned my box joints out better so the construction wouldn’t have been so difficult. I wish that I had started the project earlier.

Hi Ethan,
I think the joints are the coolest aspect of your box. They really do help it look clean, and avoid having to fill in holes with wood putty or something. If you added some smaller boxes in the big box, it could still work really well for jewelry if that is really what you want. Interesting about the linseed oil. Have you considered adding a stain or varnish? Maybe you could put her name or initials in the top? If you want to get really fancy, you could add some side hinges so that it won’t over-extend. Just a few ideas.
