Hi, my name is Shohei Hara. I’m originally from Japan, but I grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. I currently work full-time as a product engineer at General Electric, specializing in power generation control systems. I’m pursuing an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, planning to graduate in December.
Skill Sets:
I have 6 years of experience as a product engineer. As such, I have much experience in product design, testing, manufacturing documentation, user manuals, brochures, etc. Most of this experience revolves around various industrial electro-mechanical products.
I also have experience in industrial controls, human-machine interface devices (GUI), general knowledge of power generation, electrical grid, systems engineering, project management, and business management/leadership.
I have working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Photoshop. I also have experience with Matlab and block diagram programming, but it’s been awhile since I’ve programmed anything.
I also have a garage with storage space, basic tools, air compressor, chain saw, Dremel, table saw, etc.
Aspirations:
I enjoy working in a large corporation with many opportunities for professional and technical growth. I would like to eventually transition into renewable energy and data analytics. I am hoping my skillset in power generation controls will translate over to wind, solar, etc. For the time being, I would like to stay in Colorado and develop my career. I actively consume business leadership/management books; some of my favorites are “Good to Great” by Jim Collins and “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling and being active. I feel like my best when I am pursuing a vision/goal, actively learning, eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, helping others, and cultivating positive relationships.

That’s so cool that you already have 6 years of experience as a product engineer. Your experience in product design, testing, and documentation will be extremely useful in this course and far beyond! Good luck becoming a product designer or engineer in renewable energy and data analytics, I’m sure you’ll get a great opportunity in the coming years. I also think this is the perfect class for you if you feel like you’re best when, “Pursuing a vision/goal, actively learning, eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, helping others, and cultivating positive relationships.” as you stated. Your 3D modeling and printing will likely come in handy. I originally learned on Autodesk Inventor as well but have been using Solidworks since I came to CU, so at the very least we can communicate well together. Other than that, I find a lot of similarities in our skills and aspirations. I look forward to working on these projects together!
That is awesome that you have a full time job already! How do you find time to work and be in school? I also like that you know exactly what your aspirations and goals are… looks like you’re on the path to success!
